Community Outreach

At King Street Cats we endeavor to assist and educate the local community in regard to cat welfare. We accomplish this through outreach to the community in a number of ways.

KSC FOOD PANTRY

During the economic downturn in 2009, KSC witnessed a noticable increase in the number of people looking to surrender their cats not because they wanted to, but because they could not afford to feed them. To prevent that from happening, and to keep cats and their families together, KSC set up a food pantry with assistance from Petco. People in need can find out if they are eligible for the program by filling out this form and emailing it to King Street Cats: contact@kingstreetcats.org.

Our Food Pantry Program was featured on WAMU radio in 2011. If you would like to donate food for the program, please visit our How to Donate page.

ANIMEALS ON WHEELS

We wanted to share news about a new service for seniors and their animal companions. Senior Services of Alexandria and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria have teamed up to provide a new service for Alexandria’s seniors: Animeals on Wheels! Once a month, SSA’s volunteers will pick up pet food that has been donated to the animal shelter and deliver it to lower income seniors (60+ years) in the City of Alexandria for their dog or cat. Deliveries are on the first Thursday of each month, between 1pm-2pm.

If you know anyone who could benefit from this program, contact Mary Lee Anderson of SSA at: executivedirector@seniorservicesalex.org or call: 703-836-4414 ext 11.

PARTNERSHIP WITH LYLES CROUCH TRADITIONAL ACADEMY

We were thrilled to be invited to partner with Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy's Animal Crusader Program, which is aimed at teaching children at the local school about animal welfare. Accompanied by some kittens, our volunteers visited the school again in 2014, and gave a short talk about cat and kitten care. Our cats, like Courtney pictured below, love visits from the children, who not only make toys for the cats but also hold regular food and supply donation drives for KSC. Way to go guys.

No More Homeless Pets Network

King Street Cats is a proud partner in Best Friend's Animal Society's No More Homeless Pets Network, which holds that when rescue groups work together, we save more lives; it's as simple as that. So, when we got the call from Best Friends in October 2012 to help a shelter in West Virginia that had been badly damaged during the snow storm that accompanied Hurricane Sandy, our volunteers and supporters responded.

We collected enough food, blankets, and other supplies to send two transports to West Virginia. On the way back, we brought six cats from the shelter, including Cotton who is deaf and Mallory who is blind. We knew that they would have a good chance of being adopted in animal-friendly Alexandria. In fact, all six cats are now in their forever homes!
